  SCOTLAND ~ THE GREAT GLEN WAY  ~ F r e e   C y c l i n g   T r a i l s ~

The Great Glen WayFrom Fort William to Inverness along the Great Glen Way, about 112km in 2 days of MTB trail riding. Passing by Banavie, Caledonian Canal, Loch Lochy, Invergarry, Bridge Of Oich, Fort Augustus, Invermariston, Loch Ness, Inverness.

Our trail route differs to the normal way, we take on the harder stuff. You will still be following the Great Glen but taking on more challenging tracks and hidden single-track gems.

This long cycling trail covers some of Scotland's most stunning scenery with some demanding cycling you will ever encounter. Do you have what it takes?, to tackle a Bicyclemania Trailfinders on/off road MTB cycle route which will take you on a roller coaster ride by the great Lochs of Scotland.

You could possibly have all the four seasons in one day . . . a bright & sunny morning could turn into a wet & windy afternoon or vice versa. In general the rainfall is greater in the west than in the central and eastern regions and the spring and autumn are drier than July and August. Perhaps the best time to cycle across Scotland is the early or late season avoiding the main tourist months of July and August.  'Plus the mosquitoes'

Starts off at the world famous 'Neptune's Staircase, designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1822, Neptune's Staircase at Banavie elevates vessels 64 feet above sea-level through 8 locks. Right history lesson over, you head off on good canal / loch side tracks following the canal system along to the start of loch Lochy. Ride through wooded tracks and single-tracks past small villages.

Follow our trail rising and falling through South Laggan Forest back down to shore level. Now and then you hear the traffic thundering along the A-82. The last part of the ride takes you back down to the Caledonian Canal before you arrive at the little village of Fort Augustus on the shores of Loch Ness.

After Fort Augustus comes climbs into loch side forests with fire road tracks and wonderful views looking down onto loch Ness. The tracks follow the mountain side contours up and down, which start to get the legs burning.

Dropping down to Drumnadrochit by Urquhart Bay you pick up the (A-82) for about three miles use the roadside footpath to the next hard section, now comes a long hard slog up to about 465m. The last section of the trail has a cocktail of all sorts of tracks, especially a fast wooded section. You do not see Inverness the end destination until the last couple of miles. With a great view looking down onto Inverness you drop down hill to the end.
