The info:
Grizedale Forest has some of the best mountain biking trails
in all of the Lake District, and the G.M.B.C. has put
together a fantastic course to test you to the limit, with a
big bonus of brilliant views. The course is run entirely
over forestry land so inevitably this creates a real mix of
terrain for the riders. The singletrack is fast, exciting
and a little testing in places, the fireroad is sweet relief
and the 'landrover tracks' can make you wish you had
four-wheel drive! It climbs to a height of 294m and this
being the Lake District means the views are stunning. No
other event in England can claim to have all of this.! |

"A
Septembers Sunny Day"
On the start line
pointing straight up a big hill climb. Chiefy is at the
Grizedale Forest Park in the heart of the Lake District. Guess
who's on the front row, yes' it's Mr Barrie Clarke...er, I
wonder who will win this race?.
Air horn go's and we are off, Chiefy say's he was with the
leading pack for the first mile and then his chain came off, so
a quick stop and of again he went. Flicking to top ring for a
down-hill run his chain comes off again, so Chiefy has to coast
it to the bottom and then sort the problem out.
The course was
excellent, it had everything from fast fire roads, up- hills,
down- hills, single-tracks, walking- bits, river- crossing and
technical- sections.
Chiefy's Double Misfortunes:

Firstly he went flying over the handle-bars after dropping into
a deep hole in a big pool of water, somewhere on the ridge
looking down over Coniston water, he said he went totally under
water but came up laughing.....yerr..I' am sure. Covered in muck
and dripping wet he was now set on a mission to blast it to the
finish line but misfortune two was waiting to strike.
Chiefy came up to a route marker at the top of a small climb and
blasted on down the trail failing to notice that the arrow was
blowing in the wind and was actually pointing to the left. When
he got to the bottom of the trail and realised his mistake he
had already covered about 3.5 miles. On the climb back to the
race route he meet up with another 5 riders who had done exactly
the same thing.
Frustrated Chiefy
blasted the last section of the race to the finish and managed a
photo-finish with another rider, Both of them flat-out over the
finish line. Like Chiefy said 'the weather was good so what the
hell'.
The hot conditions tested each rider to his or her limit, you
really had to keep your wits about you. The course twisted &
turned its way all over the Grizedale Forest area starting and
finishing back at the main centre. |
