WHAT NO BRAKES ! . . . . CRASH & BURN BABY !:
'Sort the problem'
1. Brake test:
There are a number of ways you can check that your brakes are working properly.Shimano XTR V - brake set { front or rear } With your weight on the handlebar, squeeze the front brake lever hard & try to push the bike forwards. It should be impossible to move the bike without skidding the wheel or lifting the rear wheel. Then do the same to the rear brake. When you squeeze the brake lever it should not come up to the bar, if it does you will need to adjust the cable.

2. Pads:
When the brake lever is squeezed the brake pads should meet the wheel rim equally and level.
'Some brake pads need to be toe in only'

3. When to replace the brake pads:Brake pad wear indcators are groves cut into the bottom of the blocks
The brake pads should be replaced when the brake indicator has all but gone from the side of the brake block or the brake grooves have worn away.

4. All brakes work by using friction:

Using friction to slow down the wheels, and therefore stopping the bike. In almost all modern mountain bikes friction is caused by rubber or composite brake pads rubbing on the wheel rims or disc rotors.
This action in it's self generates heat, which can make the wheel rims & disc rotors become very hot.
(Don't touch the rotors or rims after prolonged braking)
