FIX IT THE MOST STRESSED COMPONENT ON A BICYCLE:
1. Grab the crank arms & wiggle them towards & away from the frame:
There should be no play. If you detect slop, determine if the axle is moving with the crank, or if the crank is moving on the axle. If the whole lot is moving and you have a sealed cartridge bottom bracket on most bikes since 1992  the BB is probably no good. Try tweaking the retaining cup / ring, which might have loosened. The axle should spin effortlessly, or with some hydraulic resistance. If it feels or sounds dry, the BB needs replacing. If you have an older cup and cone BB, you can try eliminating the play with an overhaul before you pay out for a new BB. You'll have to remove the lock-ring on the left side with a special lock-ring - spanner tool, then turnShimano XTR crank (2003) the adjustable cup counter clockwise to remove it. You may need a special tool for this as well. Remove the axle bearings, re-grease, and reinstall. If you got lost after the first sentence or would rather watch TV.  have a local shop perform the job.

2. Check for worn or bent teeth on the chain-rings:
Worn teeth look sharper and thinner. If you keep riding with a worn ring, it will wear your chain quicker which will then wear all your other chain-rings and cassette quicker, and be more prone to chain - suck. Bent teeth can usually be straightened. Snug an adjustable wrench against the flat sides of the tooth and bend it back. Your chain-rings are probably aluminium, however, which means you don't get many chances to fiddle with the tooth before it snaps off. Get it right the first time.

SYMPTOM CAUSE REMEDY
Weird noise when pedalling Loose toe clip bolt on pedals cage pedal loose on crank chain ring bolts crank loose
or bottom bracket cups loose
Tighten toe clips or pedal cage or pedals or chain rings or crank bolts or tighten an adjust bottom bracket
Crank will not turn freely whilst pedalling Bottom bracket cups to tight in the frame or water in the b/b or worn Adjust the b/b or overhaul and re grease the b/b or replace if it is a cartridge type
Chain rubs against the front Mech Front Mech out of adjustment or chain ring spider arm is bent Reposition Mech replace the chain rings or replace the crank
Chain rings worn Age and use it will happen Replace chain rings and get a new chain
Old chain slips on sprockets
or the crank-set
The chain is worn out ?
Due to wear and tare
Replace the chain
Remember to buy the right 8 / 9 speed
New chain slips on sprockets
or the crank-set
Sprockets or the crank-set
are worn out
Replace the necessary parts
for smoother running & better shifting

'From now on check for' Check crank bolts once a month.
Check after the first couple of rides after fitting a new crank.
Check chain-rings for wear every 1000 miles.
Check for B/B for slop every month.
