'No chain, . . . . no
ride!, we've ridden & rated 6 of the best' |

1. Clean and lube:

It's best to leave the chain on the bike when
cleaning it. Every-time you break a chain it gets weaker,
and more likely to fail out on that trail miles from home
and in the rain on an up - hill climb, changing gears. Get a sponge and
squirt a dab of washing up liquid on the middle and fold it
over the chain and turn the crank. Once the chain is clean
leave it for 10 minutes to dry and then apply your lube, for
a proper job lube each pin. The quickest way is to hold the
lube over the bottom jockey wheel and back pedal, once dry
wipe the chain and any lube you remove isn't in the chain
and will attract dirt.
2.
Check for chain wear:
Although it's
called chain stretching, your chain doesn't actually
lengthen. The pins and bushings wear away, which increases
the distance between the pins. When this happens the chain
will not sit right on the cogs and chain-rings. The signs of
a worn chain are slow and imprecise shifts, noisy operation
and a rough pedalling feel. Lubeing will not fix it, time
for a new chain.
3. Check for tight links:
If you've
cleaned your chain and it passes the wear test but still
skips, try back pedalling slowly while watching the rear
mech. If the rear Mech jumps, a tight link just passed
through. Identify the link, then hold the chain with one
hand on either side of the bad link. Flex the chain in and
out a few times, it should loosen up, if not it's time for a
new chain. |
