IT'S
SUNDAY, SO ITS ANOTHER EVENTS DAY
~ Bicyclemania Ride ~ Come on lets get out of
the car and get kitted up for this event then, But its
raining and cold was the shouted reply. Chiefy &
Rammstein do the manly thing and just do it! get
kitted up and head for the start line for the Senior
men's open event, leaving Kidder to wallow in the
barrage of insults bestowed on him for not doing the
race. But he was smiling for he was the one who will
stay warm and dry. The pair were on the start line in
the poring rain for about 40 seconds and then.
"GO" was
heard through the wet ear-drums. The grass field at
the start was very tough going because your wheels
were sinking to about 2" into the water-logged ground,
once into the twisty single-track the wheels started
to roll much faster and free. You could not help but
feel the cold rain working its way down your neck, so
the only thing to do was get the hammer down and build
up some heat. On the far side of the course the track
was flattish but a mean head wind cut you back and
made for hard pedalling. Then came the quarry section
with its short sharp climbs mixed with large water
ponds, after than bit you hit a small section of road
just enough for the tyres to shed some of their excess
baggage.
On you
went into the theme parks far side and in and out of
the big dippers massive steel works, here there were
some tricky sections in and out of the woods. Once you
had cleared the dipper you had chance to blast it down
a section to another grassy-sapping bit, once again it
made for hard crank-turning. After that you were into
the main theme park area, unique to Lightwater Laike
with its train-lines and lake side tracks taking you
in and out of the parks rides. Lap 1 bagged, and as
warm as toast but strangely wet through and very dirty
brown looking lap 2 was awaiting the soggy racers.
The
things we mountain bikers do on any given Sunday!.
This event is well organized and good fun, so you
don't mind the discomfort when its going to help a
charity and you get a buzz for the days event, plus
two days to dry out.
