After breakfast, it was left out of the
hostel and the start of the long climb up
onto the high ground out of the Lakes.
Kidder & Chiefy had hauled there bikes up to
the top of the Garburn Pass at 1,475 feet &
downhill through Kentmere. At the top of
another climb near Stile End they meet two
fellow bikers sponsored by Evans cycle
shop down in London village, they were doing
the tour of Britain & were covering about 50
- 60 miles a day & camping too boot. Kidder
& Chiefy had there YHA. pack-up's at the
isolated Mosedale cottage, the pair must of
looked quite relaxed sat in the courtyard on
old Victorian high backed chains which they
had dragged out to sit in the sun, all that
was missing was the butler.
Kidder & Chiefy devoured the food and then
set off for Shap and a well deserved pint.
The pair took one last look at the Lakes
behind them from the top of High Wether Howe
at about 1,557 feet before heading downhill
off the Fells to Shap. At the village it was
liquid refreshments at the Greyhound hotel
by the main road. Topped up they headed onto
Kirby Stephen crossing the rail and motorway
links. The pair were going well until they
arrived at the endless gates and fields full
of cows and the odd bulls. Fields cleared
they big ringed it to Kirby Stephen &
arriving in town just as the shops were
closing. They managed to grab a table in the
high street chippy, no conversation, they
just tucked in.
The YHA. was spot-on & after a shower they
went out to sample Kirby Stephen night life.
There were three people in the pub including
Kidder & Chiefy, the third person owned
it.......! |
